CASE STUDY

ESSENTIAL EDINBURGH

Situation

In conjunction with Edinburgh City Councils Experimental Traffic Regulations Order (ETRO) Essential Edinburgh planned to bring some of the restaurants on Edinburgh city centre’s George Street out onto the street as part of a part-pedestrianisation trial of this iconic city centre area. Creating an improved atmosphere and allowing the businesses involved to increase their capacity and provide a unique experience for their guests.

Task

Purvis Marquees were approached to provide an aesthetically pleasing temporary solution for this eighteen-month trial project that would need to stand up to the erratic Scottish weather and the council’s strict building control.

Action

Giulio Barbieri pagoda marquees were imported from the factory in Italy for their clean white finish and unique look and adapted to strengthen the structures to cope with high winds experienced in the city. In total there were seven complete restaurants constructed with various client-specific finishes.

Result

Beautiful outdoor glazed restaurant extensions that provided customers with a unique dining experience. The structures were signed off by building control and in place for a year.

Essential Edinburgh manage the Edinburgh New Town city centre Business Improvement District. The area covered stretches from Charlotte Square to the new St. James Centre.

Edinburgh City Council gave the go-ahead for marquees to be erected along George Street in time for the festival in 2014 as part of their Experimental Traffic Regulations Order (ETRO). The council had been promoting the idea of Alfresco dining to encourage tourism and business within the city with a trial part road closure along this iconic city centre destination. Purvis Marquees were approached by Essential Edinburgh, the Business Improvement District for the city centre, and tasked with finding a solution that would attract the businesses on George Street and relied on the project teams expertise to adapt the structures so they could be signed off by building control and withstand the often unpredictable weather experienced in the city over a long period of time.

Giulio Barbieri pagoda units were presented as an option due to their aesthetic qualities and unusual outside frame. Variations of the structures were provided for individual client’s requests including fulling glazed sliding side panels, soft window walls sides on a sliding clack system. Essential Edinburgh arranged the installation of raised decking systems with concrete ballasting incorporated into the substructure. Bracing wires and anchors were also installed to provide structural wind resistance.

A complex build commenced in a busy city centre area with certain sections of George Street being closed off as the build progressed. The finished look was amazing with these elegant white pagodas becoming focal points along this famous street with customers experiencing a unique dining experience. Sides could be opened in the hot weather and closed and heated in the colder winter months.

Even with gale force winds during the winter, the structures stood strong due to the additional fixings and bracing. Once the contract had come to an end, the restaurants sold off the structures or moved them to different locations to be used again.

CLIENT FEEDBACK

In 2013 Essential Edinburgh was approached by the City of Edinburgh Council to look at utilising the on-street space their Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO) for George Street would create.

Essential Edinburgh is a Business Improvement District (BID), a private not-for-profit company entirely funded through a business levy paid by businesses within our area. The most sustainable and impactful way to support our businesses within the city centre during the ETRO was to create additional al-fresco dining opportunities along the length of the street.

We engaged Purvis Marquees to look at the possibilities and practicalities of creating temporary, attractive and affordable dining areas that would be suitable regardless of the Scottish weather and would be in place for the extent of the ETRO.

The options they presented provided our restaurants and cafes with a choice of attractive marquees that could be tailored to each business’s requirements and budgets. Due to the length of duration of the ETRO, and potential for unpredictable weather, Purvis installed additional ballast and fixings to ensure the marquees were safe and signed off by the Council’s Building Control.

Purvis were highly professional and offered a high level support and expertise to the project and businesses involved.
