Role:

General Manager

How long have you worked at Purvis Marquees?

I joined Purvis Marquees in 1978 as a site labourer.

Where did you work / what did you do before?

It was so long ago but I was an apprentice fencer before Purvis Marquees and this was straight out of school. This really ignited the love for working outdoors and drove me to stumble into the world of marquees.

Describe a typical working day for you:

Organised madness!! Working for Purvis Marquees means that I am involved in all aspects of the business. I love working with our teams on-site training the next generation of tenters and keeping the constant drive to maintain health & safety standards. With my many years of service I do a bit of everything.

Best parts of working with the Purvis Team?

We are all very outgoing characters, and I love this, I love problem solving, designing structures and helping guide a customer to a first class structure that puts a smile on their face. I have such a passion for events and marquees and I am above all a people person.

Biggest Achievement / highlight of career to date?

The projects that stand out the most include royal work for Prince Abdula, Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia and a tensile fabric sports hall covering 5184 sq. metres erected for the Asian Games in Kuala Lumpar. Other projects include the Public Works Department in Bermuda reservoir cover, a 4000 seat concert hall in Baltimore and a 5,500 sq. metres air supported structure in Minnesota which is used as an indoor golf driving range. More recently an indoor tennis hall at Deal, an indoor bowling centre at Cheltenham, a hospitality area at the James Hunt Racing Center and a cover of the statue of Lady Godiva in Coventry have been supplied. In addition the Majlis tent in Dubai at the Zabeel Palace was constructed, a complete refurbishment of the Royal Dedication Tent in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia took place and frontages for Volkswagen showrooms throughout the UK have been completed.

What’s your top tip for event organisers?

Book and plan as early as possible.

How do you relax?

I have never really found it easy to relax but I have found it easier over the more recent years due to having a stronger team around me, providing the support that I need to allow me to unwind. I tend to save my relaxation up for my holidays abroad when I enjoy switching off, well nearly switch off anyway. Holidays abroad, football and golf.
