CASE STUDY
MICHELIN TYRES, DUNDEE
Situation
Due to a slowing market, Michelin Tyres had found themselves in a situation where they needed additional storage to maintain their daily production quota.
Task
Provide a temporary structure with the maximum amount of storage for the space available within their complex facility.
Action
Provide and build a massive storage structure that tied in with the existing buildings and was accessible to staff and plant operating in the area while complying with Michelin Tyres strict health & safety policies.
Result
A temporary structure capable of storing 65,000 tires and a facility that has continued to provide our client with an excellent storage solution for the past 7 months.
Michelin Dundee, Scotland’s only tyre manufacturing plant, opened in the early 1970s after a small team from France toured potential sites for a new factory and settled on farmland near Baldovie, in the north-east of the city.
It went on to become one of the global tyre giant’s most efficient facilities after an operational overhaul.
The multi-million-pound injection allowed the establishment of a new production line for the company’s flagship environmentally-friendly low-rolling-resistance tyres.
Michelin celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2012, before welcoming the Queen to open the plant’s massive expansion in 2016.
The investment included new machinery, to boost production capacity by 30%, and a 20,000 square-metre warehouse.

Purvis Structures were contacted by Michelin Tyres with an emergency request! Due to the stagnant market in tire production, Michelin had the urgent need for additional long-term storage and warehousing of around 60,000 tires. The requirement for a large but temporary storage facility suited Purvis Structures stock holding and the team reacted fast!
The structure supplied was a 31m span by 50m long structure on a 4m leg height. A forklift strip curtain was also installed in the gable end to provide access. Due to the ground conditions, the structure was partly pinned into the tarmac and the remainder drilled and bolted into concrete.
Our project management team worked closely with Michelin Tyres to design the structure and plan and manage the build. With health and safety at the forefront and a busy factory environment to contend with, along with some of the worst weather conditions for many years, everything went smoothly. Access was retained to adjoining buildings and the site was stripped of problem obstacles.
Our client was ecstatic with the service that they received and grateful for all of the team’s efforts and assistance to provide such a large structure in a tight timescale.
Requested on the back of the contract was the installation of a structure that the company owned. Ground protection was also provided and installed to allow for an access path to the factory entrance.
The management team will be providing monthly inspections of the structure along with a 24-hour call out service for peace of mind.
CLIENT FEEDBACK
Purvis Marquees reacted to an urgent need that we had for tyre storage at our facility in Dundee. Due to a slowdown in market demand, we found ourselves in the position of running out of storage space. The efficiency for the Purvis Marquees team can’t be underestimated and such a large structure as well.
The facility in Dundee operate under strict health & safety procedures and this seemed to be second nature to the site team and management.
This large storage structure was installed in a short time frame and with minimal disruption to the surrounding facility operations and staff. Even in extremely harsh weather conditions, the team carried out a safe and efficient build providing us with the capacity for long term storage of 60,000 tyres.
