Capturing Our Stories
We all know the anticipation that accompanies setting up a large-scale outdoor event. But take a moment to appreciate the journey that gets you there. Our stories, challenges, triumphs, and yes, the occasional mishap that make these events memorable.
At Purvis Marquee Hire, we’ve been privileged to be part of countless journeys. With over six decades in the marquee industry, we’ve seen it all—sunshine and rain, smooth sails and stormy waters. We’ve had the pleasure of working with some of the best in the business, and we share some of the stories and lessons we’ve learned along the way.
The Art of Anticipation
One of the most exhilarating aspects of our work is the anticipation. The moment we get a call from a client with a vision—whether it’s a corporate retreat, a music festival, or an agricultural show—we feel the rush. It’s not just about providing a marquee; it’s about crafting a space that brings their vision to life.
Take, for instance, the time we were tasked with setting up for a major athletic festival north of Glasgow. The logistics were complex: remote location, unpredictable weather, and a tight schedule. But that’s where our expertise shines. We worked closely with the event planners, anticipating potential challenges and preparing for every eventuality. Our team set up a range of structures, from intimate VIP areas to large performance spaces, ensuring each was tailored to the unique needs of the event. And when the day came, it was nothing short of spectacular.
Navigating the Unexpected
One of the golden rules of event planning is to expect the unexpected. Weather can change, suppliers can run late, and last-minute changes are almost a given. But that’s where the real magic happens—how we adapt and respond.
I recall an instance where we were setting up for a high-profile corporate event, and a sudden downpour threatened to derail everything. The ground was becoming a mud pit, and the event was just hours away. But instead of panicking, we rolled up our sleeves and got to work. We brought in extra flooring to stabilise the ground, adjusted the layout to accommodate for the weather, and kept communication open with the client. The result? An event that went off without a hitch, with guests none the wiser to the challenges behind the scenes.
The Human Element
Beyond the logistics and the structures, at the heart of every event are the people. The joy of the King and Queen on the day they were offered the keys of the city, the excitement of attendees, the camaraderie of colleagues at a the Castle—these are the moments that make all the hard work worthwhile. It’s about creating an experience that leaves a lasting impression.
One of our favourite stories is from the 900th Anniversary of Edinburgh where we set up a series of themed marquees. Each one offered a unique experience—one was a chill-out zone with yoga mats and soft lighting, another was a vibrant space for workshops and activities. Seeing the joy and engagement of the attendees reminded us why we do what we do. It’s not just about the structures we build; it’s about the memories we help create.
The Unseen Heroes
As we wrap up, we want to acknowledge the unseen heroes of the industry—our crew, our partners, and all the event professionals who work tirelessly behind the scenes. The success of any event is a collective effort, and we’re proud to be part of such a dedicated and passionate community.
So, what’s next for Purvis? Well, we’ll continue doing what we do best—providing innovative, reliable solutions for outdoor events. In the spirit of keeping things unpredictable, let’s leave you with this thought: The best stories are often the ones that don’t go according to plan. They remind us that in the world of events, every challenge is an opportunity to create something extraordinary. And isn’t that what makes this industry so exciting?
